Text adventures, or Interactive Fiction, as they are now called, are now long outdated graphically, but these give you much more freedom to do what you want and can be much more challenging mentally and more fun. Also, downloads are generally short. Try at least one of these out before you condemn them. They can be very fun at times, even more so than graphical games.

The Colossal Caves Page	An interesting site with two classic games, Colossal Caves & Dungeon, available for DOS.
Losing Your Grip	A long text adventure that is very challenging, but is also fun.
Gamer's Inn	A good selection of text adventures for DOS, Windows, and even a few for apple & mac users. Nice site!
Snacky Pete's TA archive	Great page with many text adventures & long descriptions for each, some with links to the solutions(which are usually needed).
Kingsley's Mansion	An interesting text adventure for dos, kind of a ghost story, with a good sense of humor.
